1. Although James was born in Indiana, his family moved to Santa Monica, California, when he was young. After his mother’s death, James was sent to live with his aunt and uncle on a farm in Fairmount, Indiana.
2. James was active in sports and played baseball, basketball, was on the track team, and set a record in pole vault while in high school. He was considered a popular student at school and his interests also extended to drama and public speaking.
